Wood Ageing Solution
Hicks Sharp & Co has been manufacturing surface coatings since 1983. We developed and started marketing Pine Antiquator in 1991. Having established a demand for Pine Antiquator in the retail market, we then went on to supply it as a mail order product in 1992.
What is Pine Antiquator?
Antiquator is more than just a stain. It is a chemical solution designed to produce an ´aged’ look on new softwood timber, whilst lending a pleasant mellow colouration. It is a water-based, alkaline liquid with good penetrative power and one or more applications may be used until the desired affect is achieved.
It is safe and easy to use. As a guideline, one litre will cover approx. 140 square feet or 14 square metres.
Pine Antiquator compared to other stains
There is considerable consumer dissatisfaction with the results obtained using conventional stains. Spirit and oil based stains are not suitable for use on pine. Because of their rapid penetration, especially of end grain and chatter marks around knots, combined with their quick drying, it is extremely difficult to obtain a uniform colour. The results are patchy, with overlaps being very obvious. By comparison, Antiquator produces an extremely even finish and is very forgiving of the method of application. Being water based it is obviously non-flammable and very low odour.
Antiquator fills a genuine gap in the market and has proved to be very popular with both the public and the building and manufacturing trades.
A large percentage of our sales are repeat orders. That speaks for itself. Customers would not keep coming back to us if the results were not what they wanted.
We have supplied it all over the world, from Australia, Africa, the Far East, America, Europe, even Iceland. We are often told that it produces the effect our customers always wanted to achieve, but couldn't before using Antiquator. It was independently tested by "Good Woodworking" magazine and came out as "what finished off the best.".
Q1.Why Use It?
A1. If new softwood is treated with any of the normal range of spirit or water-based stains the timber will still retain its ´new’ shiny appearance, albeit now a bit darker. The resulting appearance is of new timber with a stain applied. It fools nobody. The effect of prior application of Antiquator is to remove the shiny appearance and to produce a coloration closely matching that of timber that has mellowed with age.
Q2.Where To Use It?
A2. ANTIQUATOR can be used to ´age’ newly fabricated items of furniture, cupboards, shelves etc., as well as architectural items, such as doors, skirting board, architrave, flooring, moldings and so on, so that they blend with existing ´old’ fittings. Whether renovating or extending old properties or building new but still wanting an "old" look ANTIQUATOR is the answer.
